    Scientists think that many —— perhaps most —— animals cannot see colors.The world is black and white to them.

    科学家认为，许多动物，也许大多数的动物都不能分辨颜色。对它们来说，整个世界只有黑白两种颜色。

 

    To find out if dogs could see colors, scientists gave dogs food ever time they played a certain piece of music.

    为了弄清狗能否分辨颜色，科学家们每次给狗喂食时都播放同一首乐曲。

The dogs got ready to eat only when they heard this piece of music.

狗一听到这首曲子就准备进食。

They did not get ready to eat when they heard other pieces of music.

    Then the scientists gave the dogs food every time they showed them a certain color.The dogs got ready to eat when they saw this color.

然而，科学家们每次给狗喂食时都出示同一种颜色。狗一看到这种颜色就准备进食。

The scientists then showed the dogs another color.Again the dogs got ready to eat.The colors were all the same to them.

接下来科学家们又给狗出示另一种颜色。它们再一次作好了进食的准备。对狗来说，各种颜色都是一样的。

 

    Colors are not all the same to monkeys, however. 

然而，对猴子来说，颜色并不完全相同。

For example, if we put food in a red box, and do this every day, a monkey will always go to the red box to get the food.

例如：如果我们把食物放在一只红色的盒子里，每天都这样做，猴子会一直到红色的盒子那儿去找食物。

If we then put food in a blue box, the monkey won't go to it.

如果我们把食物放在一只蓝色的盒子里，猴子就不会去了。
